Canoeing the Yukon River – Laberge to Dawson City

Departures

June 10th to 25th 2026

Other dates, please contact us

This expedition covers the Yukon River from Lake Laberge to Dawson City, combining remote paddling, camping, and a genuine backcountry experience. You follow the river’s natural flow, navigating calm stretches as well as faster sections, and set up camp along secluded beaches each night. The focus is on steady, sustainable travel: paddlers carry their gear, prepare healthy and gourmet meals, and learn to read the river and its surroundings.

Along the route, you’ll pass historical Gold Rush sites and uninhabited stretches where wildlife is abundant. Moose, beavers, swans, and a variety of waterfowl are commonly seen along the way. This trip is intended for paddlers looking for a long, real Yukon river journey, one that combines navigation, endurance, and immersion in northern landscapes without artificial embellishment.

I did the Coastal Mountains Trek and it was truly one of the best experiences of my life. This trek takes you into some of the most gorgeous nature you can find on this planet. On top of that - Terre Boreale is an incredible company. Our guide (Amelie) was amazing and they thought of every detail. The food was delicious (hot zucchini and feta pasta after a long day hike… what is better!!) and we are already looking forward to our next trip. If you are considering a trek in the Yukon, I can’t recommend Terre Boreale enough.

Donjek 2025

Unbelievable experience hiking to the Donjek and back. As a more novice backpacker, I truly appreciated the expertise and professionalism of the two guides. Both women were prepared, knowledgeable, and just all around fantastic human beings. This was an extreme trip (as the website clearly states) and I felt safe and confident in the abilities and decisions of the guides. Whether it was crossing paths with a grizzly or a steep mountain pass, both guides led the group with their expertise and passion for the Yukon backcountry. Every detail was planned with care and compassion. I truly appreciated Terre Borale’s commitment to the environment. The “leave no trace” principle was strictly adhered to throughout the trip. All around amazing experience.

Donjek Glacier

As an experienced hiker it was very interesting to see new kind of hiking techniques and methods. But all good. The route and itinerary was obviously planned with knowledge and experience. There was always plan B as you never know what nature and off trail hiking throws at you. Have to admit that it was physically tough as "Extreme" should be but extremely rewarding and immemorial. We were lucky with the weather as it plays enormous factor in outdoor activity. Guides were simply super women! Speechless after the effort they did. We had nice group and a trip to remember for the rest of our lives!

We hiked the Kluane Colors Tour guided by Edouard and we absolutely loved everything about it! What Terre Boreale offers is not to be compared with any other Tour agency at least from my experience. For both the owners and the employees you can tell that they live their values, they love what they do and they are so happy to pass it on to their customers. In our case we were a small group of three plus our guide Edouard. Ed was super knowledgeable, skilled and fun - so very easy to trust him in all decisions around the trek. We felt in very good hands all along and we had lots of fun together as a team! The trek itself is just stunning! We enjoyed breathtaking views and untouched landscapes. All of the logistics around it were also perfectly done - shout out to Milena for the super friendly communication ahead of the trip and the delicious food which is homemade by her! All in all this trip surpassed our expectations (which were already high) by far! We will have to come back at some point…

Me and 5 mates had a wonderful 12 day canoe trip that was beyond my expectations in every respect. Our guides Marc and Ed are highly skilled in the art guiding but the food they prepared was the standout - we ate like kings! Kudos to them and the Terre Boreale team for everything that went into delivering a great experience. The 5 stars is barely enough!!

My husband and I spent a week in July backpacking the Kluane Colours route off trail in Kluane National Park. We had a great group and got lucky with the weather which always helps. The scenery surpassed all expectations and I'd put it in the world-class category. I figured off trail would require a lot of "bushwacking" but other than an hour or two of nasty alders one day, the route traversed open country. What a treat to experience a place where few people have trod.

Night in a hotel in Whitehorse

Shortly after breakfast we take the hour drive to Lake Laberge, immortalized in the poem “The Cremation of Sam McGee” to begin our paddling adventure. This 50 km by 5 km lake is renowned for cold water and dangerous winds. For this reason, we will cross the lake to the north end by motor boat. There, we load the canoes with all our gear and take our first strokes on the Yukon river. Immediately we travel back in time, as we explore a few sites with remnants and artefacts from the time of the of the gold rush. We take the afternoon to go through safety briefings etc. You will also get a chance to go on the water and practice your strokes if you desire. If times allow you will start canoeing down the Yukon river today. In the evening, we enjoy our first meal around the fire!

Night in a tent

This morning we begin our 12 day adventure paddling 600 km down stream to Dawson City along this historical river. After the discovery of placer gold on Bonanza creek by three prospectors in 1896, thousands of men and women travelled the Yukon River to try their luck “striking it rich” in the Dawson area. For the first few days, we paddle the wildest section of the river where we have the best odds of observing northern wildlife. There are numerous historical site along this stretch: abandoned woodyards and telegraph stations, remains of old steamboats, etc.
Each evening, we set up camp on one of the numerous camping spots along the shore of the river, and cook gourmet foods on the camp fire!
In September, in this remote land, far away from light pollution, we will have the opportunity to watch stars in the clear night skies and maybe even a show of northern lights!

Shortly after passing by Carmacks, we encounter the only rapids on the Yukon river between Whitehorse and Dawson, Five Finger Rapids. During the gold rush, these rapids were a major obstacle for the prospectors’ wooden rafts, but at the beginning of 20th century, a channel was blasted to allow passage for larger steamboats. Today, Five Finger Rapids are a rather small challenge on our way.

Further down stream, we visit of the most famous historical sites along the Yukon River: Fort Selkirk, a Hudson Bay Company trading post dating back to 1852.

Next the White River, a major tributary flowing from the southwest and heavily laden with glacial silts, joins the Yukon River. From this point on, the clarity of the Yukon River is dramatically changed and its flow quickens. Ten kilometers further downstream, the Stewart River flow in from the northeast. From here, we paddle straight north on the last stretch to our destination Dawson City.

Throughout the trip we practice and share our knowledge of leave-no-trace travel and zero waste philosophy.
