Yukon and Alaska - From the mountains to the sea
From the mountains of Kluane National Park in Yukon to the fjord of Haines and Skagway in Southeast Alaska, discover the culture, the landscapes and the wildlife of the North in this 9 days trip.
Day after day
Day 0: Upon your arrival at Whitehorse airport you pick up your rental car and drive down to your accommodation for the night. Depending on your time of arrival, you may have time to visit Whitehorse on foot, right from your hotel!
Day 1 : You head West on the Alaska Highway towards Haines Junction, a two hours drive from Whitehorse. Half way there, you see the high mountains of Kluane National Park where Mount Logan, the highest summit in Canada is situated. In 1994, Kluane and the neighboring parks (two in Alaska and one in British Columbia) were declared a UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Site. In Haines Junction, you may stop at the Da Ku cultural center where you can check out the permanent exhibit on Aishihik and Champagne First Nations and on Kluane National Park. At the end of the day you head towards Kathleen lake where you will be spending two nights in cabins.
Day 2 : Today you go on an easy 4h hike in the Park, guided by an ex-parc ranger who knows the park so well that he even knows the bear by their names! On the way you take the time to check out track from grizzly bears, moose or even wolves. The rest of the day is freeso you can enjoy the surroundings of your cabin, and especially Kathleen Lake.
Day 3 : You will change your perpective today as you go on a flightseeing tour over the largest icefield outside the polar caps, all the way to the foot of Mount Logan. There, you will land and have the opportunity to walk on the hundreds of meters thick glacier ice and admire the greatness of the mountains around you!
Day 4 : You head south on the Haines road, and discover gorgious mountain and wide valleys as you get higher in the Coast Mountains. Once in Haines, you take the time to check out Chilkat State Park and its awesome views on the Rainbow and Davidson Glaciers. Drive to the end of the road at the Chilkoot State Park where, when the time is right, locals gather and fish for salmon in the lake as well a in the river. Haines is a great place to watch for wildlife as grizzly bears can be seen on the shore of the Chilkoot River while whales and other sea mammals can be spotted anywhere around Haines peninsula!
Day 5 : In order to get a better view of you surroundings, you hike up the central mountain of Haines peninsula, where you will enjoy a 360° view on the fjord, the mountain and the glaciers... On your way, you will walk through the uniue atmosphere of the northern coastal rainforests.
Day 6 : Today you go for day cruise to Juneau, capital of Alaska. On the way you will have time to watch for whales, sea lions, seals, bald eagle or even orcas! You then have a few hours to visit Juneau before taking a short bus ride to see Mendenhall glacier, an impressive sight!
Day 7 : In late morning you get on the ferry to go to Skagway, an hour away. Skagway is where thousands of prospectors coming from Seattle set foot in the north before crossing the Chilkoot pass and floating down the Yukon river to Dawson City. After a lunch in the 1898 looking town of Skagway, you visit the abandonned village of Dyea, starting point of the famous Chilkoot trail.
Day 8 : You drive up the Klondike highway towards Carcross, in the Yukon. The road winds as it crosses the Coast mountains and takes us to the network of lakes which constitutes Yukon river headwaters. In less than 2 hours you drive through a gorgious diversity of landscapes before reaching Carcross. You can to visit the small village, build on the shore of Bennett Lake where the 1898 prospectors started their float down the Yukon River towards Dawson City. Shortly after the village you can stop again for a walk in Carcross desert, a series of sand dunes considered to be the smallest desert in the world. Later in the afternoon you finish the drive on the Klondike highway to Whitehorse.
Day 9 : Connection to the airport or to your next adventure.
