Yukon and Alaska - From the mountains to the sea

Description

From the mountains of Kluane National Park in Yukon to the fjord of Haines and Skagway in Southeast Alaska, discover the culture, thes landscapes and the wildlife of the North in this 10 days trip.

Day after day

Day 1 : We greet you upon arrival at Whitehorse airport and drive you to your accommodation for the night. In the evening, you will meet up with the other participants and will discuss the last details for your adventure with your guide(s).

Day 2 : We head West on the Alaska Highway towards Haines Junction, a two hours drive from Whitehorse. Half way there, we see the high mountains of Kluane National Park where Mount Logan, the highest summit in Canada is situated. In 1994, Kluane and the neighboring parks (two in Alaska and one in British Columbia) were declared a UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Site. In Haines Junction, we stop at the Da Ku cultural center where you can check out the permanent exhibit on Aishihik and Champagne First Nations. From there, we go to Kathleen lake, within Kluane National Park, where we will be spending two nights. We can fish for trout or even go for a short hike around the lake if we have time.

Day 3 : After a short drive, we go on an easy day hike in the Park, to Thunderegg creek where the mountain spits out round shaped rocks! On the way we take the time to check out track from grizzly bears, moose or even wolves. Maybe we will even have the opportunity to see Dall sheep on the steep slopes. At the end of the end we head back to our camp on Kathleen lake.

Day 4 : we move on the Haines road, to the South, and discover gorgious mountain landscapes as we get higher in the Coast Mountains. Once in the higher valley, we stop the van and start an overnight hike. This beautiful hike will take us through the alpines to a spectacular view on Samuel glacier. Four hours are needed to go from the road to the view point where we pitch our tents for the night.

Day 5 : After enjoying breakfast in front of the glacier, we turn around and head back to the van. We then get back on the road and finish the drive to Haines in Alaska. Haines is sitting on the shore of a fjord surrounded by high peaks and hanging glaciers. Late in the afternoon we set up camp in the coastal rain forest.

Day 6 : We have the day to discover Haines and its surroundings. From the Chilkat state park we might have the chance to see whales and sea lions swimming in the fjord. Chilkoot state park is renowned for its good salmon and dolly trout fishing as well as for being frequented by Grizzly bears...

Day 7 : You have 2 options today :
You can hike up to the summit of Haines Peninsula to check out the 360° view on the fjord, mountains, glaciers and Chilkat and Chilkoot rivers. A perfect intermediate difficulty day hike.
Or you can go for day cruise to Juneau, capital of Alaska. On the way you will have time to watch for whales, sea lions, seals, bald eagle or even orcas! You then have a few hours to visit Juneau before taking a short bus ride to see Mendenhall glacier, an impressive sight! (this option is only available from mid-May till mid-September).

Day 8 : In late morning we get on the ferry to go to Skagway, an hour away. Skagway is where the thousands of prospectors coming from Seattle set foot in the north before crossing the Chilkoot pass and floating down the Yukon river to Dawson City. In the afternoon, we visit the abandonned village of Dyea, starting point of the famous Chilkoot trail. We set up camp near by.

Day 9 : We drive up the Klondike highway to reach Carcross, in Yukon. The road winds as it crosses the Coast mountains and takes us to the network of lakes which constitutes Yukon river headwaters. Wetake that opportunity to visit Carcross and see Carcross desert, a series of sand dunes considered to be the smallest desert in the world. Later in the afternoon we finish the drive on the Klondike highway to Whitehorse.
Or you can choose the option, only available from the end of May till early in September. Get in the train and climb up almost 1000 meter in just about 32 km via a number of tunnels and bridges. We meet up in Carcross and finish the drive to Whitehorse together.

Day 10 : Connection to the airport or to your next adventure.
